Dear Sugarloaf Community,
The week is Earth Day, the annual celebration of our environment and what we can
do to protect it. Throughout the world, people will plant trees and flowers, compost,
join stream clean-ups, build birdhouses, and recycle to give back to our planet.
But did you know that buying crafts can also make our world a little greener?
Many of Sugarloaf's artists are engaged in upcycling - reusing discarded or surplus
materials to create something of value: art. If you attended any of our Spring shows,
you saw dozens of examples of upcycling - and you may not have even known it. Our
artists are constantly discovering innovative ways to incorporate recycled or repurposed
materials into their work, and it makes for some fabulous treasures.
Next time you're at a Sugarloaf show (we'll announce our Fall schedule soon), keep
an eye out for our green artists. Be sure to ask them about the materials they use
in their work - the variety is simply amazing!
In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, I'd like to introduce you to some of our green artists...

Dee Dee DeFabio-Lake: Tiny ephemera and trinkets create big visual impact in Dee
Dee's jewelry. She reuses guitar picks, bottle caps, vintage bubblegum charms,
Christmas lights, and lost keys, among other found objects, in her youthful baubles
and bracelets. Dee Dee never starts with a complete idea in mind, letting all the
different components she incorporates into her one-of-a-kind pieces dictate their

Ed Kidera: Befitting their place in the garden, Ed's "green" sculptures are created
using discarded oxygen tanks and used metal objects, including farm equipment and
car parts. His large-scale bells and sculptures of unusual garden creatures can
be found in galleries across the country. Be sure to check out Ed's imaginative

Jenifer Northup: All that glitters definitely is not gold. Jennifer repurposes ornate
heirloom silver spoons and flatware to create her charming jewelry, including bracelets,
pendants, and watches. At our Spring shows, Jenifer introduced her new line of butterfly-inspired

Victoria Tane: Victoria's tagline is "creating elegance through upcycling." She
transforms everyday items such as telephone wire, antique buttons, frosting applicator
tips, and pencil eraser caps into beautifully eclectic jewelry. She gets all of
her pieces secondhand - from yard sales, thrift stores, salvage shops, and in-kind
donations from fans of her. What is the wellspring of her creative vision? Victoria
says that she never looks at things the way they are, but rather always what they

Melanie Moore: Melanie's hair ornaments go far beyond function - by combining vintage
beads and lace to dried pond grasses and fishnet, they add fun flare to any ensemble.
Melanie had long admired the hair ornaments European women wear, and decided to
bring the trend to the states! And sure enough, it caught on - with fashion's biggest
