Dear Sugarloaf Community,
Happy (upcoming) Mother's Day. As a mother and a daughter, I have come to really
appreciate this holiday. We are all so busy that it is sometimes hard to stop,
take a breath, and recognize the special people in our lives - like our mothers
and the people we mother.

So Mom - thank you for your never ending support and encouragement. Each day, I
see a little bit of you in myself, and it gives me great pleasure. And to my kids
- thank you, too, for bringing me joy and making me proud. I may love my work, and
my hobbies, and my friends, but it is nothing compared to my love for you.

My guess is that I'll be getting some kind of jewelry on Sunday. It's the universal,
time-tested, and always appreciated token of affection.

I thought I would introduce you to some of the Sugarloaf jewelry artists that I
know mothers enjoy. I know it's still several months till we kick off our Fall season
of Sugarloaf Crafts Festivals, but I just couldn't resist sharing some of our fabulous

Betty Stephan: Every year, the beading and jewelry supply company Fire Mountain
holds a jewelry making contest, and every year, Betty finishes right at the top
as a finalist with her hand-embroidered collars. Betty's "blue ribbon" pieces are
absolutely stunning, with intricate multicolored beadwork that begins by fastening
cabochons and beaded bezel to a stiff backing, which is then attached to soft leather

Martin Taber: Martin Taber's jewelry is red carpet ready! This year, he was chosen
to show his work backstage at the Oscars, where some famous folks including William
Shatner and Natalie Cole couldn't wait to try on some of his and his father Bob's
work. One of their signature pieces, a series of stackable gold and silver rings,

Jennifer Hook and Gary Ayres: Why are two jewelers being featured in Quiltmaker
Magazine? Because Jennifer and Gary combine their love of quilting and jewelry to
incorporate antique quilt designs into their porcelain earrings, bracelets, and
pendants. Jennifer's designs are visual narratives while Gary's are bold and geometric,

Dahlia Kanner: She makes jewelry from a small studio in the smallest state in the
country, but the entire world is inspiration for Dahlia's pieces. She's been collecting
nature specimens - plants and tree segments, minerals, fungi, hives, and even skeletons
- for years, and they now serve as the inspiration for her contemporary jewelry.
The forms and textures from these natural elements are translated into abstract

Leah Sturgis: From the urban wilds of Chicago to the untamed wilds of Alaska - Leah
has spent significant parts of her life in both places. She blends inspiration from
the monumental architecture of urban life with wild elements of nature to create
jewelry that explores where, as she says, "landscape and architecture intersect."

Cornelia Goldsmith: Appropriately enough, Cornelia Goldsmith is just that - a goldsmith.
Brightly-colored gemstones are wrapped in her sculptural gold pieces - shaped like
trees, birds, and butterflies. Her impressive contemporary jewelry has been featured
in national magazines and journals, and published in books on jewelry design. From
