Dear Sugarloaf Community,
Memorial Day... Fourth of July... Labor Day... the summer is filled with holidays.
A Sugarloaf friend told me that he thinks that summer really begins this Saturday
- it's Buy a Musical Instrument Day. This got me thinking about how musical Sugarloaf
Crafts Festivals are - and in some pretty unique ways!
If you've been to a Sugarloaf festival (and I hope you have!), you know the festive
experience at Sugarloaf is enhanced with wonderfully diverse live music. Some of
our events feature soothing jazz by Ngu Mbandi, singable show tunes and piano standards

But there's more to music at Sugarloaf - there are a wide range of artists who prove
that music is more than just a pleasure to the ear, but also to the eye. When thinking
about the "beautiful music" that crafts make in our lives, I was reminded of some
of the Sugarloaf craftspeople who are using music as inspiration to create their
fantastic visual art.

Dee Dee's line of music-inspired accessories is appropriately titled "Rock n Roll."
Created using found objects and thrift store finds, she makes necklaces, earrings,
and pendants using old guitar picks, band memorabilia, and worn ticket stubs encased
in resin. Her jewelry is accented with materials including ribbon fringe, spent
bullet casings, and decorative beads - refinement with a hard edge!

Static images come to life in Rufus' optical glass-tiled murals and spinning disks.
His patented design makes still pictures appear to move as the viewer walks by.
Among his designs are a pianoman's hands walking all over an ivory keyboard and
a jazz musician belting out tunes on a trumpet. His work is featured in aquariums,
science museums, train stations, and other public places around the globe.

Janeil Stewart: From The Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen, and Bon Jovi to Britney
Spears, Janeil has seen them all. Music aficionados bring CDs of their favorite
artists for her to turn into decorative wall clocks. Sometimes folks will just leave
bagfuls of old CDs on her doorstep! The faces of the clocks are decorated with paint,
decoupage, and imposed photographs, while the back is left plain to reveal the album
art, artist, and album title.

The showmanship of any performer has to be matched by their guitar - and John's
artistic hand makes any ordinary instrument stand out with bright colors, shimmering
detail, geometric lines, and graphic images. John uses an image transfer technique
to combine computer graphics, with inlaid strips of glitter, prism, and marble paper
to create his bold pieces. In addition to customizing guitars, he also creates wearable
art and home accessories.

Jane uses everyday ephemera and relics to create elaborate and eccentric 3D collage
art and clocks. Refrigerator magnets, boat propellers and machinery, figurines,
buttons and jewelry accessories are all in her repertoire of supplies - and so is
music. Jane also uses small instruments - including whistles and harmonicas - and
vinyl records collected from her adventures to consignment and vintage shops to
adorn her art.
