Dear Sugarloaf Community,
Barbecues and picnics, pool parties, fireworks and a long weekend of summer lounging...
it's Memorial Day. While this holiday is a fantastic time to enjoy the company of
friends and all the fun of summer - I hope that we will all take a moment in the
midst of our activities to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. Our servicemen
and women who gave their lives to protect our country deserve our recognition.

In honor of the upcoming holiday (and in the spirit of every Sugarloaf artist having
an interesting story to tell), I want to introduce you to Ray Mancini, a Sugarloaf
artist who has dedicated his creative energy to preserving the memory of our veterans
through collage art.

Ray's artistic hobby became a business when he realized that his daughters were
unaware of their grandfather's involvement in history. A World War II navy veteran,
Ray's father-in-law Emil Casale was present for the signing of the Japanese Instrument
of Surrender in September 1945, alongside the famous ship USS Missouri in Tokyo
Bay. He decided to share his father-in-law's story through a collage storyboard
for his daughters - incorporating old photographs, images of Americana, and vintage
military memorabilia and medals, with custom color and graphic treatments.

This sentimental gift was a springboard for Ray's daughters to ask questions and
share stories about their grandfather, while preserving his memory and place in
history.

Upon seeing his collage, requests began pouring in from friends and family members
who wanted to honor their loved ones with one of Ray's instant heirlooms. Before
long, he was steeped in the past, surrounded by black and white photographs, mementos,
and personal stories. Art galleries were attracted to his unique process, and began
to display Ray's work. Soon after, he began fielding inquiries from across the country.

Ray has expanded his repertoire to include mixed media art, which depict iconic
locales throughout the world, dance and music, classic diners and cars, nautical
imagery, and other themes. However, creating custom pieces to honor servicemen
is still one of Ray's favorite projects.

Each custom piece takes about 18 hours to complete. His mixed media pieces take
up to nine months to finish, and include up to 185 different objects and images.
