TEDDY BEAR TIPS

Teddy Bear Eyes

The first teddy bears had eyes made from black shoe or boot buttons. These were usually made of metal or wood and sewn on using the wire loops on the back. Steiff began using glass eyes in 1912 and manufacturers began using glass doll or taxidermy eyes during the 1920s. Today, makers of collectible teddy bears use all of these traditional options, while those who make bears for children usually use plastic safety eyes. These unbreakable eyes lock into the fur so children can't pull them out and swallow them.

DOLL TIPS

Vinyl Dolls & Mold

Soft vinyl dolls were popular in the 1950s. These dolls are often stained with black and green marks. This is usually mold. Use a commercial mildew remover that is chlorine free, but be sure to test is somewhere on the body of the doll before applying it to areas that can be seen. If the test goes well, wipe the entire doll, then wash with warm, soapy water, rinse and dry. Remove mildew from hard plastic dolls with a chlorine free bathroom cleaner. NEVER USE CHLORINE BLEACH OR PRODUCTS CONTAINING CHLORINE ON A VINYL OR PLASTIC DOLL. THIS WILL DESTROY THE SKIN COATING.
