Dear Sugarloaf Community,
I am sure you have walked through a Sugarloaf Crafts Festival, perusing the thousands
of handmade crafts, and wonder, "How'd they do that?" Every item made by the artists
at our shows is lovingly created with tremendous skill and care - and the many steps
it takes to complete a single piece are a wonder. Our shows are not just a place
to appreciate the finished product, but also the process of creating it. That's
why you'll always find live demonstrations at our shows. We want you to see how
your favorite items are made.
As our next Festival gets closer, I want to introduce you to some of the talented
craftspeople who will be demonstrating their skill at the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival
in Somerset, New Jersey, March 12-14, and at our other shows throughout the Spring!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John Akkus: Metal sparks and shavings fly behind protective Plexiglas in John's
booth, as he uses a metal spinning lathe to etch intricate designs into copper and
brass jewelry, decorative plates and vases, candle holders, keepsake boxes, and
ornaments. John began pursuing his passion in 1989 after leaving a 17-year career
with General Electric - and now he's happy to share his art with Sugarloaf visitors.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Alan Burslem: Alan creates oversized pots and vessels that tower over his potter's
wheel - it's a wonder that the soft clay stays upright! His designs range from classical
with intricate hand-painted details, to the abstract, with streaks of multicolored
glazes splattered across the pieces to create stunning layers of color. (www.delawarebyhand.org/burslem.htm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bob DeWitt: Bob brings art into the kitchen with a beautiful variety of serving
utensils, cutting boards, and bowls in richly-colored woods. Learn about the historic
art of hand-carving, and see how Bob works with graining and imperfections in the
wood to create his pieces. His is a demonstration "knot" to be missed!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Barry Leader: The bright colors and whimsical "fantasy furniture" in Barry's booth
are sure to catch your attention. Tables, mirrors, toy chests, and décor with unexpected
proportions, bowed and swooping legs, flowing curls, and geometric cutouts are fun
and irreverent. See the "magic" behind Barry's unique furniture as he cuts, paints,
and customizes each piece. (www.raintreedesignstudio.biz [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103094286516&s=51627&e=001763G2CdXvErjRWuwaJ-eFqVfPCkRvcslz7agp1mKdwUPuMcR1QuF_Z50jS_0SrrjG_XSD7lwiXazPCOtnJv5IRPilbik_XvVbR0KLmPs2mfvM-9UMpMg6Y1MhSwBGNBi])
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
William Richardson: William's traditional Shaker-style crafts are instant heirlooms
for fans of Americana. Crafted using single sheets of beautifully marbleized or
grained wood, the museum-quality boxes, jewelry chests, trays, and baskets are homage
to the "Shaker style of simple beauty." At our shows, Bob will demonstrate how he
preserves this American art form. (www.suffolkshakershop.com [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103094286516&s=51627&e=001763G2CdXvEqwkmWByqodSRvIJGx-Sj0OeM5RvrKhroJgU23IDAhlo0VBWGofJpN2H2GyeYkuSZYZlwH9Feu3FCepVKXwhoCYijmKHdJALUColg6Ui0Pjv82mgIQv6RQ9])
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bud Scheffel: Bud's booth is alive with motion - his kinetic sculptures, mobiles,
and garden stakes endlessly oscillate. Bud makes both large- and small-scale garden
sculptures that are calibrated to achieve precise balance, and are accented with
glass orbs that beautifully catch the sunlight. Watch as Bud crafts his pieces
from a single sheet of metal, cutting and bending it into the shapes of animals
and nature symbols such as the sun and moon. (www.earthsaverwindsculpture.com [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103094286516&s=51627&e=001763G2CdXvEqYOAi3fX14ivxssAHO3aV9BEefwyqpMd3PSjI-Ty6vOUJlCMP_3PnkXrh2CRRtC2jPmRWiOdC7nrmmu5w20WsJ0mKjrwb0RqJuSFsPAlryJzH-QCxx1dh5])
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marti Silverman: A master of the traditional craft of stone carving, Marti works
on each of his pieces for weeks at a time using only a hammer and chisel. His contemporary
designs are carved from raw rock slabs, including grey lava rock and richly-veined
alabaster. The fluid lines found in nature inspire his sculptures, fountains, and
large-scale garden installations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Allen Weichman: Allen and Helen Weichman are staples at Sugarloaf shows. While Helen
delights visitors with her adorable dog sculptures, Allen demonstrates how a lump
of clay can by plied and shaped into functional stoneware, including bowls, plates,
tea pots, mugs, and vases. Visitors can see the love that Allen puts into each of
his one-of-a-kind pieces as he works on the potter's wheel. (www.groundhogbluespottery.com
