Dear Sugarloaf Community,
It's Mardi Gras time!
I remember when this annual event only happened in New Orleans with weeks of parades
and revelry. Today, Mardi Gras is celebrated all over the country and has become
one of our more festive celebrations. When you think of Mardi Gras, what are the
first things that come to mind? For me, it's the elaborate masks and the bright
beads thrown from parade floats.
Masks... beads... sounds like the creations of some of my favorite Sugarloaf artists!
Actually, these are two of the hottest trends in contemporary craft. Jewelry artists
are using incredible beads in a variety of styles, including hand-blown glass, luscious
pearls, rare gems, crystals, and hand-thrown ceramics. For many artists, masks give
them a new outlet for experimentation - they are incorporating objects like feathers,
metals, and sculpted leather into their fanciful creations.
Be sure to stop by and say hello to these inspired bead and mask artists at an upcoming
Sugarloaf Crafts Festival.

Rich colors, detailed designs, and fine craftsmanship bring unique character to
Bill's masks. His art ranges from playful interpretations of familiar figures and
creatures, like Dionysus and a Tiger, to abstract forms combining natural elements
like butterfly wings, leaves, and feathers.

A self-taught artist, Diane crafts her elaborate beaded jewelry using seed beads,
semi-precious gemstones, pearls, and crystals. Her sophisticated designs often feature
oversized pendants surrounded by clusters of similarly-colored beads and stones
arranged in intricate patterns.

Marti carefully weaves and ties natural pearls and stones into her sculptural necklaces
and earrings using a fine metal thread. Her jewelry has classic appeal, the thread
gracefully entangling delicate, softly-colored pearls to make her signature cluster
pendants.

Stiff, sculpted wire cradles loose strands of gems, stones, and beads that hang
freely in Gil's amazing necklaces. His work beautifully combines sculptural form
with the dangling threaded beads. Gil also makes earrings to match his neckwear
for a cohesive look.

Robin's jewelry is a treat to admire and to wear. Her necklaces are made in a dark,
robust color palette of beads that spiral to encircle an oversized, colorful stone.
They play nicely off the geometric, triangular designs of her bracelets.

You wouldn't think wearing a mask made of copper would be comfortable, but Kest
designs his to fit snugly, just like a pair of glasses. His signature mask is called
the Gatekeeper, named after the guardsmen of the Emerald City. The mask's upturned
eyebrows and pointed nose convey a sense of playful mischief.
