Dear Sugarloaf Community,
If you're like me, you're probably trying to keep as cool as possible during the
summer heat. We've had some record-setting, milestone days around here. So it struck
me as funny, in the middle of summer, that I would be thinking about fleece scarves,
thermal hats, winter caps, and neckwarmers.
Why? I am looking through the list of exhibitors for our Fall shows, and when I
came to "Ryan Williamson," I was reminded about his milestone this past year. Maybe
his story will remind you of cooler days.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last year, Ryan designed 45 custom hats for an expedition to the highest spot on
the planet, Mount Everest. The trip was mounted by Champion Apparel and Duofold
Thermal Clothing (which are owned by the Hanes Company). They contacted Ryan about
the expedition last summer, and he spent most of the year preparing patterns and
sewing hats for the May 2010 expedition.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For this project, Ryan redesigned his hats and created custom patterns for headgear
that could withstand the fierce cold and winds of Everest. He used new materials
(new for him!) such as Gore-Tex and wind-proof fleece to keep hikers toasty on
their trip to the mountain's summit (a whopping 29,000 feet!).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ryan's hats were mainly worn by the Sherpas, who are the local Tibetan peoples employed
as guides on mountaineering trips. As expert navigators of the world's tallest peak,
they are known as the most skilled hikers. Ryan also created Balaclavas (hood-like
hats) to keep the hikers' heads insulated and warm while they slept.
You can see video's from the expedition (featuring Ryan's exceptional work!) on
his website [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103564865169&s=51627&e=001ejUDZQHWDkk9GkSjKQydDFYmRtYGOVRoYvW5rMWUBEsGsvp30dzp_1NEyc1Upx0P47qFzLPx81DZihrB3GFwN3Kwb1NWJp_5PnvPCt5iH8IL4okE8-ApW9Er2Fc3-TnYPbTmyCknAtjldMyfm2uQ9w==].
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ryan is always a favorite of Sugarloaf Crafts Festival visitors! He started making
fleece hats and other accessories, such as backpacks, tents, and clothing, at the
age of 14. He used his homemade gear for backpacking trips - and soon discovered
that his friends wanted to buy it. His growing business helped get him through
college. Now, he works in a solar-powered studio in Virginia, where he makes more
than 8,000 hats a year.
Ryan is a passionate environmentalist - nothing goes to waste in his studio. He
uses discarded fabric from mills and factories to create his garments, and recycles
every possible scrap of material. For an entire year, Ryan can fit all the "waste"
from his studio in a small plastic grocery bag. Talk about efficient!
He takes one backpacking trip a year and only wears his own designs - everything
but the shoes! The name of his business, The Mouse Works, was inspired by his nickname,
"Timothy Mouse," which he gave himself while hiking the Appalachian Trail.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can see Ryan at many of our Fall Sugarloaf Craft Festivals. To check out other
Inquiring Minds...
I am wondering, have sales gotten better at spring shows since the recession hit? I am also looking into doing some personal research to see if sales are better at indoor vs. outdoor shows. Any thoughts?
Robert Held's Six Tips for Fledgling Businesses
The creative aspects of glass master Robert Held's work may be what drives his art, but he is never far removed from the bottom-line realities of running a business. He suggests other aspiring artisans remain equally engaged: "I know some artists sort of resist that component and don't feel that you need the business and marketing tools, but you have to be realistic," he says. "You have to be able to look at a balance sheet. You need to have a business plan...
Just Ask by Donald Clark
Q: I've had my wood-carving business for a number of years, and now I am ready to get my work into more galleries and shops. However, I'm not sure that I have the time and experience necessary to do this. Should I hire an artist's broker/representative? I've heard varying opinions (some strong) about this. Would it be beneficial to hire one? Or should I just press on and try to do my own representation?
A: You don't say what you are carving and whether you create one-of-a-kind pieces or produce multiples of the same items. Remember, a shop is a retail business...
Make a kid pup tent
Posted: 14 Jul 2010 04:16 AM PDT
I already have a store bought kid tent that is pretty rad. It pops up in like 5 seconds and breaks down in another 5 seconds and ends up being a little larger than a folded up umbrella. It’s good for taing to the beach.
But I really like this simple DIY kid pup tent tutorial over on the Ready Made…
