Happy Valentine's Day!
I know, I know...Valentine's Day was last Sunday. But as life seems to have been
put on hold in our Sugarloaf communities due to the historic snowfall last week,
we at Sugarloaf have decided to extend the holiday! (Even Maryland's Governor O'Malley
has officially extended the holiday in the state through February 21 due to the
weather)!
I wanted to take this week to introduce you to some couples who celebrate their
love every day by collaborating and working together to produce the gorgeous handmade
items you love. These Sugarloaf artists work as teams in life and in art. Sugarloaf's
"couples in crafts" are inspiring.

Anna and Costas Continos: Anna and Costas met on a blind date in New York City on
the platform of the 96th street station on the IRT Broadway train line! They walked
the streets of Manhattan on a double date with Anna's best friend and her boyfriend.
The Continos will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year! An accomplished
watercolorist, Anna combines her artistry and creative vision with her husband's
skill in metalsmithing to create their line of brightly-colored contemporary jewelry.

Charles and Caryn Donofrio: Before they met, Caryn was a self-proclaimed "non-artist"
- but Charles began teaching her his craft a few years before their marriage in
1981. The couple met in his hometown of Danbury, Connecticut, where they still live.
Their collaborative work is a favorite among Sugarloaf fans. The Donofrios' extensive
line of imaginative and functional bags are hand stitched and crafted in supple

Heather and Matt King: Using reclaimed trees from Illinois and Kentucky, the Kings
fashion beautiful bowls, picture frames, and other home accents from lumber that
would otherwise be sent to landfills. They began collaborating during their three-month
honeymoon in 2004. Feeling an instant connection, the couple dated for less than

Sue and Ira Lances: The Lances' colorful chenille clothes are a staple at our Sugarloaf
shows. And color is part of what brought this couple together - they arrived at
the same house party, both driving Athena blue Pontiac Firebirds - and were inseparable
for the rest of the night! In January, the Lances celebrated their 30th wedding
anniversary, which also marked their three decades of collaborating on their line

Allen and Helen Weichman: Sugarloaf fans know to expect the warm smiles and clay-covered
handshakes of Allen and Helen at all of our shows. While Allen throws clay on a
potter's wheel during our live demonstrations, Helen delights visitors with her
ceramic animal sculptures. The couple met as teenagers; their first date was a 5
cent ride on the Staten Island Ferry. They were married in 1970 and have been working
