Dear Sugarloaf Community,
At Sugarloaf, we love to introduce you to the finest artists who travel from across
the country to be in our shows and share their unique works with you. We know you
appreciate that Sugarloaf artists are masters of their craft, whether it's glassblowing,
metallurgy, pottery, wood carving or painting.
Do you notice anything those mediums have in common? They're all called the "traditional
arts."
Many of our craftspeople practice "old world" techniques, preserving the understanding
and appreciation of these treasured art forms.
As we head north this weekend to Hartford for the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival at the
Connecticut Expo Center, I want to introduce you to some of the wonderful artists
who are incorporating traditional techniques into their modern creations.

Shandor Madjar: Shandor's unique hinged jewelry adds a modern twist to the traditional
art of metallurgy - the hinge allows his rings and pendants to flip 180 degrees,
creating multiple looks from a single piece of jewelry. Shandor pours molten metal
into wax casts that he hand carves. After the metal hardens, he solders the hinge
joints into place. He also uses carved deer antler, ivory and stone as the centerpiece

Kenneth Marine: Kenneth expands the boundaries of traditional glassblowing with
his inventive use of brightly-colored pigments and abstract shapes. His pieces scarcely
resemble their ancient predecessors (the earliest glass works date back to about
50 B.C.), though they're made in much the same way - by blowing through a tube
into molten glass. Look for his vases with thin, spindle-like necks; bowls with
delicate, wavy lips; and his ruffled vases in vibrant hues. (www.kennethmarineglass.com

Christina Nguyen: Needle and thread take on a painterly quality in Christina's embroidered
paintings. To complete a single piece is an exercise in patience, as she meticulously
blends colors, lighting and shadows into her work using a myriad of different colored
threads. Her work often depicts nature scenes or animals - and you might even be

Martin Owino: Martin made his living selling traditional African batiks in Kenya,
Tanzania, and Zanzibar before moving to the United States in 2001. A native born
Kenyan of the Luo tribe, he is a third generation batik artist, using bright, vibrant
colors painted onto fabric to depict scenes of everyday life in East Africa. His
work has been featured at the US Embassy and USAID in Kenya. (www.kowinobatiks.com

Sharon and Jim Venner: The Venners incorporate cameo pendants carved in shell, stone,
and mammoth tusk into their gold and silver jewelry. Cameo is a historic European
carving technique which creates raised relief images on stones, shells, glass and
gemstones. Each style varies slightly by geographic region; the Venners purchase
their cameos from master artists in Italy, Germany, and Russia who are preserving
