Dear Sugarloaf Community,
It's shaping up to be a beautiful weekend for the 35th Sugarloaf Crafts Festival
in Gaithersburg! I can't wait to join you this weekend at our only indoor/outdoor
Festival of the season, as Sugarloaf celebrates 35 years of bringing you the unique
fine art and contemporary crafts of America's finest artists.
This show in Gaithersburg is a fond reminder of how fortunate I am to do what I
love, and to be surrounded by such talented, dedicated craftspeople. It warms my
heart that as I look over the names of artists participating in the Gaithersburg
show, I see people who have been with Sugarloaf since the beginning! I get just
as excited as you to catch up with the friendly faces at Sugarloaf shows, and with
all the artists I've come to know over the years.
To celebrate their commitment to Sugarloaf and your craft-pleasure, I want to introduce
you to some of the longtime artists you'll see this weekend who continue to contribute
their fine craftsmanship to our shows.

Sue and Ray Binetti (Sugarloaf artist since 1977): Sue and Ray began creating stained
glass the same year that Sugarloaf was founded! Living and working on the Chesapeake
Bay has a great influence on their work, which features a variety of native wildlife,
including herons, mallards, and crabs. The couple creates a variety of works, from
small nightlights to larger pieces such as lamps, cabinet doors, and transom covers.

Michael Podesta (Sugarloaf artist since 1977): Words become art in Michael's works.
His delicate hand creates swooping calligraphy shaped into artful patterns and images.
Michael designs art for every occasion - birthdays to anniversaries (how fitting
for us!), housewarmings and graduations - and the thing that connects all his pieces

David Nugent (Sugarloaf artist since 1978): Gemstones in the hottest colors of the
season - oranges, electric blues, purples, and greens - are framed beautifully in
David's contemporary sterling silver and gold jewelry. Precious stones including
citrine, topaz, peridot, and amethyst, are individually-selected and custom set

Lesley Reich (Sugarloaf artist since 1978): Lesley adds a touch of whimsy to her
ceramic cooking utensils, tableware, and home decor with fun printed recipes and
inspirational sayings. The hand-painted details on the classic, white ceramics make

Tom Burns (Sugarloaf artist since 1981): With a hammer and torch, Tom carefully
wraps delicate silverwork around hand-cuts gemstones. Each silver piece starts with
a sketch; a setting is then hand-made just for that one stone, and the artistic
elements are built and soldered together to match the sketch. The entire design

The Festival this weekend is a great place for a family outing! Kids can see how
our artists create their works at 11 demonstration stations throughout the Festival.
Our artists will be hosting demos all weekend! Little ones can also save maidens,
slay dragons, and experience medieval adventure during dress up fairytales with
Middle Earth Studios.
More than 20 gourmet food exhibitors will share their latest juice and blended drink
mixes, and sauces, seasonings, and snacks for grilling in the backyard.

Sugarloaf is also helping the Manna Food Center to raise funds and canned food donations
to help the hungry in Montgomery County! Be sure to bring canned goods to the Manna
booth at the Festival to contribute to our food drive. If you donate $5 or more
to Manna at the show, Sugarloaf will give you a complimentary ticket to our Fall
Gaithersburg show in October.
