Dear Sugarloaf Community,
I know that like me, you love giving beautiful handmade items as gifts, especially
birthday gifts. As I walk the aisles of Sugarloaf shows, I love seeing our visitors
buy special treasures to be given to their special people weeks, or months, in the
future. (That explains why so many of us have so many shopping bags when we leave
a show!)

Yesterday was the birthday anniversary of one of our country's greatest
craftsmen - architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This reminded me of
Sugarloaf jeweler Karen Brown, whose special connection to Wright has
really influenced her creative vision and her wonderful work.

Frank Lloyd Wright proved its hip to be square...or circular,
triangular, or rectangular. His style was heavily influenced by
geometry, and the homes he designed are now landmarks. When Wright
designed a home, he designed every part of the home, including the
furniture, the hardware, the radiator covers, and the detailed patterns
of the floor and windowpanes.

Karen Brown lived in a home designed by Wright in Rochester, New York. When she
moved to Rochester more than 30 years ago, she saw an article
about the E. E. Boynton House in the local paper and went to see it. It was love
at first sight. The house was built in 1908 and had a huge
veranda, oak floors - and 220 windows! Unfortunately, Karen and her
husband had just bought another house, but they were so enamored by the
Wright house that they came to an unusual arrangement - they "traded
houses" with the owners of the Wright house. They immediately began
restoring the property to its original glory, stripping away layers of
paint that were covering the natural woodwork that is a hallmark of
Wright's designs. Karen recalls even asking babysitters and the
children in her neighborhood to help with the renovations.

Even though she moved to the west coast years ago, Karen still
incorporates the geometric patterns from her Rochester home's windows
into her work. Her beautiful earrings, necklaces and pendants feature
the square and rectangular patterns that resemble Wright's classic
designs. Frank Lloyd Wright infusing natural colors into his work -
and so does Karen. She uses, green, and indigo gems to create striking
pieces. I think that Karen's wedding sets would make the great
architect proud. The engagement and wedding rings fit beautifully
together in a natural shape - just like Wright's designs.
