Dear Sugarloaf Community,
Hot temperatures have broken records in the past couple of days in our "Sugarloaf
cities." I hope you are staying cool and taking care of yourself by drinking lots
of water and staying inside. The only thing keeping me cool and comfortable is the
thought of a nice walk on the beach. Ahh... Cool water. Soothing colors. Nice breezes.
I can envision it all now. And (perhaps not surprisingly, since it's what I do!)
I am reminded these beach staples all serve as great artistic inspiration for many
of our Sugarloaf's artists.
So, I thought I'd offer you a little reprieve from the summer heat and introduce
you to some of Sugarloaf's "beach babies," who beat the heat with crafts inspired
by the sun, surf, and sand!

Patti combines her love of glass with her passion for the beach. She and her husband,
Mike, comb beaches for up to 40 hours per week looking for beach glass - pieces
of glass that have been washed ashore after surviving the wear and tear of waves.
The motion of the water adds different layers of color to each piece, and smoothes
their rough edges to create soft, rounded shapes. Patti uses them to create jewelry,
and mosaic wall art in the shapes of animals and flowers

Susan Hunt
Susan uses intense heat to fuse a special type of powdered glass with metal to create
her unique enamel jewelry. The glass is melted and infused with the metal to create
different textures, and a glossy finish. Susan expresses her affinity for sea animals
by featuring puffins, fish, and lobsters in her designs.

Metal artist Josef Belchatovski beautifully showcases the soothing sound of rushing
water with his elegant copper and bronze fountains. Josef draws inspiration from
nature, which he uses to create sculptures of animals and abstract shapes. The
metals in these one-of-a-kind creations adapt to the surrounding scenery, developing
an aged patina over time. His sculptural sea bird fountains are a staple at our
shows!

Jeffrey collaborates with his wife, Stephanie, to create cartoon-like stoneware
sculptures of sea creatures and decorative ceramic pieces. Exaggerated faces and
oversized features like fins and expressive eyes add humorous character to his
creations. Bright acrylic paint is used to bring vibrant color to each piece, giving
them a whimsical appearance befitting Jeffrey's fondness for the sea.

Anne Malone
Anne creates exceptional pieces of contemporary stained glass art that are meant
for more than just windows - she also makes jewelry boxes and household accessories.
Her pieces feature turtles and starfish in cool ocean colors, and her boxes are
topped with decorative glass animals as well.
