CRAFTPERSPECTIVES LECTURE
Hannah B. Higgins
The Multiple Intelligences of Fluxus
Thursday, April 22, 6:30 pm
PNCA Swigert Commons, 1241 NW Johnson St.
Free and open to the public
Commonly associated with political and cultural activism in
the 1960s, the Fluxus Movement struggled against narrow definitions of art and
performance. Hannah B. Higgins, the daughter of the Fluxus artists Alison
Knowles and Dick Higgins and noted author of Fluxus Experience, will lecture on
this movement to provide an
additional context for the practices engaged in Gestures of Resistance [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103250425607&s=10882&e=001dTP3mY-I7-OBVaYN1IUtbutDUInn91Z3UNZacOcURNt_SxqcZJFYfDsZWyQH1x0z5uk7fcntlCyfdL4h9xipQoE0kxt3L-Jj3kkKiGOZePj_LyNZtd4_wEGljn6_HYF9rtJaTHxOPfmOBM8-yMW5jSMAJ81vAoLBUa6Wgl6LtigCAWoW9C8GNRLgeQF8CjW_9Jik8cJETx4=].

Gestures of Resistance
Through June 26
Free for Museum
members; $3 general public
Gestures of Resistancefocuses on craft actions
in contemporary practice: works that use craft to agitate for change. Through a
series of seven artist residencies, open conversations and a study center, the
exhibition is a timely examination of what it means to create, to have personal
agency, and to counter drives towards productivity and consumption through
craft. Focusing on action, process and dialogue, the exhibition unfolds over
its five-month tenure. ARTIST TALK

Thursday, April 1, 12:30 pm
Pacific Northwest College of Art, Swigert Commons
1241 NW Johnson St.
Free and open to the public.
Land Art: David Shaner
Through August 7
Free for Museum
members; $3 general public
What is the relationship between craft and the Land Are Movement of the late 1960s
and early 1970s? While Robert Smithson's monumental Spiral Jetty (1970) is an example
of a heroic and gestural conceptual work in a remote location, David Shaner's work
from the early 1960s through the 1990s reveals a concurrent, domestically scaled
yet quietly sensual relationship between art and the landscape of the American
West. Through works drawn from the artist's estate and the Museum's collection,
along with photographs and personal notes taken by the artist, the exhibition reveals
how broader cultural interests in conceptual art and the land, ecology and materiality
are explored through an artist known as a "potter's potter."
Following the Rhythms of Life: The Ceramic Art of David Shaner, written by Peter
Held, Ceramic Research Center, Arizona State University, is available for purchase
in The Gallery.
Special thanks to Peter Held, Ann Shaner, Catherine and Mike Gilbert and Mike Welsh
for their assistance in organizing this exhibition.
CRAFTPERSPECTIVES CONVERSATION
Reading the Land
Daniel Duford (PNCA) and Matt Johnston (Lewis &
Clark College)
Tuesday, April 6, 6:30 pm
The Lab at Museum of Contemporary Craft
Free and open to the public. Please enter through 720 NW Davis St.
In this new program format, artist Daniel Duford and art historian Matt Johnston
will each speak for 20 minutes about how "reading" the landscape functions in their
own work, providing another lens through which the connections between David Shaner's
work and land can be understood. The final 20 minutes will focus on connecting their
talks through discussion and dialogue with the audience.

GALLERY FEATURE
The Bray
Through April 30
The Gallery at Museum of Contemporary Craft
Free and open to the public
The Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana has been at the center of the ceramics
world since its inception in 1951. Artists such as Rudy Audio and Peter Voulkos
were early Bray residents, and their work drew international attention to its programs.
Gallery artists Gerit Grimm, Jim Koudelka, Joe Pintz, Kowkie Durst, Sam Morgan and
Victoria Christen have all benefitted from Bray residencies, and Pat Horsley is
a former Bray workshop presenter. Their work as well as their thoughts about the
Bray will be on view in The Gallery from March 2 through April 30.
Museum of Contemporary Craft's exhibition Land Art: David Shaner, as well as David
Shaner's contributions to the ceramics community, inspired this gallery feature.
As Director of the Bray, David Shaner was instrumental in keeping the foundation
alive after the commercial brickyard that had originally supported it closed in
1960. The Bray's new state-of-the-art residency center is named in honor of David
and his wife Ann Shaner.
